  Or Maybe

John Grey

The hat that is not a hat
sits atop the head that is not a head.
The woman who was there all the time
suddenly appears.
It's what I wish for art.
That everything be what it is not,
that whatever reveals itself,
lies it ways to the truth.
Streaks of color move
to the center of things,
inflamed and cool,
natural and phony.
The canvas crowds with
dubious opinions,
eccentric responses.
