Deep Purple Shadow

The sun sets behind black trees;  a soft wind
cools the air.  The moon’s but an orange reminder
          of what’s yet to come
There’ll be fire tonight, concentric circles.

Then, quickly, over a peak, a single star
in the navy blue sky.  Animal sounds appear to
surround.
We gather wood, while the moon disappears.

The Blue Ridge Mountains cast their deep purple shadow
then fade into the night.
